The Kansas City Aviation Department is re-developing approximately 17 acres on the west side of Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport. This program will include several bid packages and will expand the Airport’s facilities serving general aviation. Wellner Architects, Inc. design scope for this project includes:
A 20,000-square-foot multi-use building that will have offices, a pilot’s lounge, a weather center and a “destination restaurant” to attract the area’s non-aviation population to the airport.
Approximately 112 new small-plane hangars, 13 larger hangars and an aircraft wash area. The complex will more than double the number of small-plane hangars at the airport.
A fueling station that will allow pilots to pump their own fuel.
Ten outdoor tie-down spots.
Reconstruction of taxiway.
The Aero Centre building on Lou Holland Drive and the 40 existing hangars on the site are being razed to make way for the new complex.
