This Wellner Architects, Inc. project includes classroom upgrades, roof replacement, and auditorium seat replacement at North Kansas City School District's five middle schools. The largest portion of the project involves upgrading nine classrooms in each school for use in teaching science. Upgrades include new casework, sinks, finishes, and revisions to electrical and technology distribution systems. The program was developed after surveying existing classrooms, comparing classroom conditions across the district, and reviewing the middle school science curriculum. Science classrooms in all schools were developed and estimated through schematic design. Classrooms in two middle schools continued through construction documents and were bid in October 2005. Construction on the first two schools will occur during the summer of 2006. Lessons from the first two schools will be incorporated into the final three schools which will be bid in the fall of 2006 for construction during the summer of 2007.
